Tri Cities Academy of the Sword

TCAS (Tri Cities Academy of the Sword) has been the hub of classical Italian fencing in the upstate NY area for the past decade.

TCAS teaches classical foil, epee and sabre in the Italian style and historical weapons from documented texts.

Maestro John Sullins and W. Kevin Dougherty opened TCAS in 1998 so that they could continue their pursuit of and dedication to classical Italian fencing as well as their exploration of historical weapons, primarily Victorian Broadsword, small sword. and singlestick. They were fundamental in the re-acceptance of the point d'arret in classical epee fencing and the renewed national interest in Victorian Broadsword (heavy sabre) and the manufacture of classical weapon
accessories.

Custom small swords are still available but Mr. Dougherty no longer manufactures Italian foil parts.

In 2002 Dr. (Maestro) Sullins returned to California and now conducts the Fencing Masters Program at Sanoma State University.

Mr Dougherty has continued to promote classical and historical fencing in the Binghamton,NY area and  recently moved the salle to a new facility (below) where he hopes reinvigorate the classical and historical fencing community with this superb fencing venue.

Classical fencing tournaments, weapons clinics and symposiums are scheduled throughout the year so check back often.

What We Do

For new fencers individual instruction in the basics of foil fencing is required. When the necessary skills are developed blending into our group classes is the next step.

We provide all necessary safety equipment and fencing implements  from our well stocked armory.

We sponsor monthly dry (non electric)  tournaments in all three weapons for all who want to test their skill level against others.

We also participate in other classical tournaments across the country.
